“I Made That” and Emily Smith on Oregon Public Radio

April 15, 2011

Hi friends!

Yesterday while my hands were busy with crafty things, I kept my ears busy too, listening to Destination DIY of Oregon Public Radio. The show was all about the satisfaction that comes when you’ve made something, and made it well. It was encouraging to listen to as I embark on the Year of Handmade, plus, it has the adorable Emily Smith of The Black Apple.

The interview with Casey Scott, a guy who made his own sleigh bed captured my heart. My favorite quote from that piece:

Casey: I think things mean so much more to me when I made them myself… I think in some way it’s kind of like a tattoo, it is part of me. It kind of represents a part of who I am and what I care about.

Alex Blair, reporting journalist: Knowing what Casey went through to make his bed, I see how he appreciates ordinary things. He finds them extraordinary in their creation. When I touch objects clearly crafted by someone who spent hours working with their hands, I wonder about their stories. The way, perhaps someday, someone will buy and antique sleigh bed and wonder about the man who took the time to make it.

You can listen to it here.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
