Maple Mouse Hat

July 11, 2011

One of my sister’s best friends recently had their first baby, so she commissioned me to make a custom hat for the little one, Maple.  Apparently the new mom and dad are crazy about Disney (I think she even mentioned that they got married at Disneyland?…) and she wanted me to knit a Minnie Mouse hat for her. I used this pattern on ravelry, but wanted the ears to be a little more Minnie-ish, so I found a pattern for coasters and used it for the ears instead- certainly the first time I’ve knit a circle- I didn’t even know it was possible.

I had it in my mind to embroider her name in gold thread at the back neckline, just like the hats you buy at Disneyland, but found that the combination of embroidering on knit and my poor hand-sewing skills did not make a good combination. It looked like a third grader did it. I decided simple was beautiful.

I used a superwash merino yarn so that it would be soft for the kiddo and easy to wash for mom and dad. I also had to thread black wire through the edges on the ears to help them stay perky, but one of them still has a tendency to flop. Which actually looks adorable on a cute little kid.

I knit it quite large, for sizes 12-36 months would be my guess, so she’ll be able to wear it for a long time. Hopefully little Miss Maple Mouse will like it!
